Spiritual director, TSSF, Third Order Franciscan, Contemplative, anam cara, soul friend

About Susan

I’m a retired sociologist and a professed member of the Third Order, Society of St. Francis, an order for those who live Franciscan lives “in the world.” As part of that commitment, I’ve been in continuous spiritual direction since 2001, and it’s been a vital support on my journey. I trained as a spiritual director through the “Listen With Spirit” program offered by The Priory, a community of Benedictine sisters in Lacey, Washington. I’m also a writer: author of four books in the area of spirituality (plus one academic book), and a regular contributor to Give Us This Day, a monthly prayer resource published by Liturgical Press. I’m a member of Epiphany Parish, Seattle, where I’m on the preaching team, and I enjoy giving adult forums and retreats. Above all, my greatest joy is accompanying people as they journey deeper into God.

As a Christian spiritual director in the Anglican/Episcopal tradition, I’m open to directees of any faith or none. I welcome directees regardless of gender, sexuality, race, (dis)ability, etc. I’m also open to exploring whatever issues you’d like, though some of my special interests include:

  • Contemplative/mystical spirituality

  • Spiritual practices/disciplines

  • LGBTQIA+ issues

  • Racial issues (this is my area within sociology)

  • Chronic illness

  • Healing from religious trauma

  • Healing from shame

Above all, I’m interested in celebrating the person you are and your life as it is, and listening with you for the Spirit’s guidance toward the person you’re becoming.
